The significant events from the past are recalled in the society in different ways. Already important person of the theory of collective memory, French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs pointed out that the appearance of the towns is an important source of historical knowledge.
Precisely about the places of memory is a book of historian Klara Kohoutova Od Esterházyho po Luník IX. Etnicky kódovaná místa paměti v lokálním kontextu, which was published in 2020 by Spoločenskovedný ústav CSPV SAV in Košice.
The publication introduces lots of supports of collective memory, which surrounded us in the public spaces day by day and they are the expression of our relationship to the history. The topic regarding the places of memory is popular in the last years not only in scientific community, but in community of laymen too. Historian Klara Kohoutova did focus in her publication on the phenomenon which was neglected so far, specifically these places, which carry ethnic message. Particularly she is focusing on Slovak expressions of historical knowledge in the relation to Hungarian and Roma places of memory.
The term places of memory is presented by the author as the wide scale of phenomenon, which are linked to the relation of society to the past. According French historian Pierre Nory „the basic reason of the existence these places of memory is in stopping the time, to hold on starting of forgetting, in fixation certain state of things.“
The places of memory reflect the past and represent present society and values, which are hold as the support and which are the base for collective Slovak identity, respectively the residents of Slovak republic.
This publication doesn´t contain the list of all Hungarian and Roma places of memory in Slovakia, but through these places the history will talk to you – through the memories of narrators (initiators of single places of memory, scientists, representatives of minorities, etc.) you can experience the stories, which you maybe never heard before or you were hesitant to believe.
As the part of the project Kultminor, last year Klara Kohoutova established the website PARAMISAR, which is an interactive guide for the places of memory related to the Roma past of 20th century. Due to this website, single places come to life and talk to the visitors. You can find more information about different Roma places of memory in the publication From Esterházy to Lunik IX: Sites of memory with ethnic motive in local context.
