The international day of happiness is celebrated only last few years, exactly from 2013. One year ago The United Nations declared the resolution, which was a basic stone for International day of happiness: Happiness is something, what everyone wants to pursue, what includes (or should include) wellbeing and a good quality of life. By establishing this day they think mostly about economic growth, which should harmonize with inclusion and equality. To make this development sustainable and to eradicate poverty. To establishment of International day of happiness made a large contribution state Bhutan, which is using as the indicator of economic welfare „Gross national happiness„ instead of gross national product (1).
The most important impulse came from consultant of United Nations, man Jayme Illien. He grew up in the orphanage of Mother Teresa and he was adopted by American family, he wanted to end the inequality in the world and he decided to fight for establishment of this international day of happiness (2).
Each year has its own theme, the way, how everybody can actively contribute to the world, where each person will be happier. It´s a year now when we fight with pandemic, the theme for 2021 supports the care about others and self-care, as the necessary part of personal resilience. So three main recommendations how to be happier in 2021 are very simple and effective:
- To stay calm. There is lots of things we cannot control, but there are still things which we can control. To stay calm and to distinguish, what is important and what is not important is helpful definitely.
- To be informed. If we are well informed, we can do smart decisions. And to make smart decisions means to act optimistically and support people around us to do the same.
- To be kind. This difficult period brought one more interesting knowledge – we all are living through pandemic together. Kindness in the relationships helps both sides – to the person, who gives as well to the one who receives (3).
The scientists still research, how can people reach the feeling of happiness. There is lots of studies, which analyse what people wish, what affects their feeling of happiness or how they experience the happiness. Interesting fact is, that happiness is very unique matter, everybody is happy for different reason.
If you decide to celebrate this day by making somebody smile, you will smile or you will reflect on what makes you happy, it´s up to you. You can express the gratitude too, either by thanking somebody or by creating a list of things you are thankful for. Or you can find your own way how to make yourself or others happy. These are the ways to the happiness, which are important – if not more important – than the goal (4).
