This year´s Researchers´ Night was different from previous years. Due to the current unfavourable situation, the festival moved into online format. However, this situation didn´t stop scientists from The Institute of Social Sciences CSPS SAS to participate in this event.
This year´s motto was Science without borders. The activities of the science festival were concentrated into the online space and schools throughout Slovakia. Within the Meet your scientist programme, through presentation and direct interaction, researchers motivated pupils and students to scientific careers. Ondrej Ficeri, Soňa Gabzdilová and Dominika Havrillová attented schools and presented their research online to students.
Ondrej and Soňa started their lecture at the Bilikova 24 Grammar School in Bratislava at 11 am. Their presentations lasted for 45 minutes, followed by a long discussion.
Soňa Gabzdilová: Teaching in High Schools in the period of socialism
Ondrej Ficeri: Racism in the world and in our country
Seven classes with more than 150 students attended the presentations. „The response was amazing. Each of us got a lot of questions. Very talented students. The lectures didn´t take place within specific lessons. Grammar School invited several lecturers during this day,“ said Ondrej.
Our PhD student Dominika prepared an online quiz and a discussion on the topic of psychology, intended for fifth graders of Novohradská 3 Associated School in Bratislava (discussion topics – what is psychology; what does psychology study; who is a psychologist; what kind of problems would you go/not go to solve with a psychologist; etc). In the quiz, students could test their knowledge of psychology and playfully find out if they have talent to become a psychologist. The tasks for the students in the quiz were e.g. to choose the correct emotion of a person´s facial expression, to choose positive qualities of a person and optical illusions. The fact, that the students were really interested in this topic is evidenced by their activity and many questions they had during the discussion. „The students were very talented, moreover, they have been taught in English since the 1st year of study in Elementary School. I can say with enthusiasm that there were a lot of psychological talents in this class, who playfully answered all the questions in the quiz and achieved excellent results. I believe that our future colleagues – psychologists – will be among them“, said Dominika.
