UrbanHist´s overall aim is to portray the Europeanisation of urban historiography. The exchange of theories and their respective schools, methods and objects of study, and relevant criticism shall contribute to raise the common standards of scientific quality in the historiography of 20th century European urbanism. This exchange is based on the international character of the doctoral programme, with the cooperation of the four different universities and several collaborating academic and non-academic partner organisations. The admission rules of the joint doctoral programme are meant to encourage a diversity of PhD candidates, while the multiplicity of countries under study will be a basic tenet in the information given about the programme as well as in candidate selection criteria. Moreover, our joint European Doctorate Programme will be concerned with unexplored territory along with in-depth comparative studies of local processes. The structure of the joint doctoral programme is appropriate for this kind of approach. The programme will be developed in English, but will also take advantage of the growing number of people who are fluent in more than one language and the growth of passive multilingualism for a richer exchange between PhD candidates and professors, thus contributing to the Europeanisation of communication.
